Monarch Butterfly Migration – A life story
When we talk about human migration this beautiful story came to my mind. I called it “a life story” The amazing journey of Monarch butterfly to Michoacan, Mexico.
There is a big reservoir in Michoacan – Mexico state. The world heritage sanctuary, a place where is located in the center of Mexico, a wild refuge for “La mariposa monarca“, such place is surround of trans-Mexican volcanic belt pine and oaks forest. Like every year, millions of butterflies arrive in this beautiful forest. Those majestic monarch butterflies just live in a fraction of quite 60,000 hectares of the reserve between October until March. This Monarch Butterfly Biosphere reserve has the important mission to protect the butterfly and its habitat.
Monarch’s butterfly fly from the winter places in eastern North America to Mexico, based in historical data, biologist found those areas in 1975. Around 1980 this reservoir became “The Biosphere Reserve and, in 2008 “a world heritage site.”
Their journey has to challenge different patterns like climate change; pollution, humans, geography, temperature and they follow the Sierra Madre Oriental, a chain of mountains to the preserve. To make this fantastic trip, four generations of monarch butterflies are born and died.
When humans heard the beating of their wings, the sound is compare with the sound of the rain, soon when they arrived to the reservoir, the monarch butterflies make clusters onto pines and oyamel trees, this way they are warmer despite the freezing environment of the forest. Wild life is diverse: coyotes, rabbits, owls, deer etc. but the butterflies colonies stand still, in spite of everything, their natures made them strong.
Michoacan, Mexico is one of the most traditional places whose keep of the folk traditions like “Dia de muertos” the day of the dead in November. Every year the people in the small villages are congregate in the cemetery of the town, honoring their deceased, bringing flowers and food, one of the most and beautiful picture is when this traditions are combine with spectacular flights of the monarch butterflies all over the place. Looks like a colorful painting, showing life and death.
